About this tool
The PDF is encrypted with AES 256, the current standard, by the open source qpdf engine running in your browser. Your password and file never leave your device. Anyone opening the file will need the password, so keep it somewhere safe: there is no way for us or anyone else to recover it.
Frequently asked questions
What if I forget the password?
It cannot be recovered. Keep the original unprotected file or store the password in a password manager.
Can I stop people printing or copying?
You can ask viewers to block printing and copying. Most viewers respect it, but only the open password truly stops access.
